Tanning Introduction
Tanning is the process of taking hides, skins or pelts and creating a wide variety of items from them. You can create anything from armor and shields to pouches.
From here out I will refer to skins, hides and pelts as skins unless there is a specific distinction in a step.
You can pick up all the necessary items(minus the skins) from most tanners (where you sell the skins normally).
The best quality tanned items will come from the best skinned items, this means to get the best quality you'll want to be or have a ranger pull a trophy skin.
Different patterns require a different number of parts of the skin being used so you might need to repeat steps to get the proper number.
Tanning Items
Things you will need to tan:
- hide scraper
- tanners' shears
- bone bodkin
- stout thread
- leather lotion (for skins and hides)
- pelt potion (for pelts)
- the desired pattern
- the necessary hides, skins, or pelts
Tanning Steps
- Hold the scraper in your right hand and the skin in your left, scrape skin with scraper (quick|normal|careful). If you snag while cleaning you will damage the skin and reduce the quality of the tanned item.
- Repeat step 1 until the skin is clean
- Take your tanning lotion (for skins and hides) or pelt potion (for pelts) and pour <lotion/potion> on <skin/hide/pelt>
- Repeat step 3 until you see: This seems to be all the tanning salts this <skin/hide/pelt> will need
- Wait until the skin is ready (When you look at it, it will no longer say that it is curing), this takes hours
- When the curing process is finished take your pattern and put pattern on skin
- Using your tanners' shears cut my skin
- If your pattern requires multiple pieces then repeat steps 6 and 7 until you have all the required pieces then bundle pieces to make a complete set (single piece patterns will be a set already)
- Using your bodkin poke set with bodkin
- Get out your thread and put thread in bodkin
- Put the thread away and pick up your set, then string set
Tanning Quality
As I mentioned earlier the base quality of the items will be based upon the quality of the skin being used. However there are some things that can affect the quality along the way. If during the scraping process you snag you can affect the quality. During the sewing process if you mess up you can affect the quality. Both these things are based upon your Mechanical Lore so you want to make sure you have a decent amount before attempting tanning. Listed below are the tanning qualities from worst to best. The quality discriptor is inserted as an adjective for the item being made.
- Crude
- Soddy
- Rough
- Home-made
- (no adjective)
- Elegant
- Well-made
- Sturdy
- Superb
- Superior
- Perfect
